The Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) has fined two clothing shops at Police Plaza in Gulshan for selling dresses labelled as “Indian” without valid import documents.
The fines were imposed during a market monitoring drive conducted at Police Plaza in Gulshan-1 on Thursday afternoon.
According to officials, several clothing stores were found selling dresses under the names of different countries, including India and Pakistan. However, the traders failed to produce any valid documents showing that the dresses had been legally imported.
They were also unable to provide purchase records indicating how much the products were bought for or any evidence confirming that the dresses were genuinely of Indian origin.
For these violations, two shops Poshora and Lavisho were each fined Tk 5,000, bringing the total penalty to Tk 10,000.
Bikash Chandra Das, deputy director of the DNCRP’s Dhaka divisional office, and assistant director Md. Shah Alam were led the drive.
During the inspection, shop owners claimed that the dresses had been collected from “luggage parties” or third-party suppliers. However, officials said the absence of valid documentation raised doubts about the authenticity and origin of the products.
Authorities said selling products under the names of foreign countries without proper documentation is against consumer interests. Several other shops were also issued warnings during the drive.
