The Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) has fined 87 businesses a total of Tk 1.275 million during market monitoring drives conducted across 33 districts, including Dhaka metropolitan areas, on Tuesday.
The drives were carried out across all divisions and districts of the country to monitor the prices of essential commodities and prevent various violations of consumer rights, according to the DNCRP.
A total of 56 teams conducted the operations, inspecting markets and business establishments to check whether price lists were properly displayed, prevent manipulation in weights and measures, and stop the sale of expired food and medicines.
The teams also monitored businesses to prevent the production and sale of counterfeit and adulterated products.
The DNCRP said Tk 1,275,000 in fines was imposed on and collected from 87 establishments found violating relevant consumer protection rules.
As part of efforts to raise public awareness, officials distributed leaflets and pamphlets among consumers and traders. They also used loudspeakers to provide necessary instructions to businesses and consumers.
Members of law enforcement agencies, health inspectors, the Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB), and representatives of relevant trade and business associations assisted DNCRP teams during the market monitoring operations.
The DNCRP said such market monitoring activities are being conducted to protect consumer interests and ensure compliance with laws and regulations governing the sale of essential goods and services.
