A special taskforce conducted an operation in Fakirhat of Bagerhat to ensure stable prices and uninterrupted supply of essential commodities. During the drive, two business establishments were fined a total of Tk 9,000 for selling expired medicines, using fabric dye in food items, and applying unauthorised flavours.
According to officials, the operation was carried out on Monday (1 December) at Fakirhat Bazar by a taskforce formed in Bagerhat district. Fakirhat Poultry and Ma Bakery & Confectionery were penalised and cautioned under Sections 43 and 51 of the Consumer Rights Protection Act, 2009.
Sharifa Sultana, assistant director of the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) in Bagerhat, issued the fine. The businesses paid the penalty on the spot and pledged not to repeat such violations.
She said that as part of routine monitoring, other establishments in the area were also inspected, and leaflets and pamphlets were distributed to raise public awareness and discourage consumer rights violations.
During the drive, business owners were instructed to display price lists prominently, sell goods at fair prices, maintain purchase vouchers, refrain from selling counterfeit or adulterated food and medicine, and avoid illegal stockpiling. A team from the Ansar force assisted in the operation.
Officials said such drives will continue in the interest of public safety and consumer protection.
