A Tejgaon-based trader was fined Tk 10,000 on Monday for selling a 12kg LPG cylinder at Tk 1,750, although the government-fixed price is Tk 1,585.

The fine was imposed on Taher Enterprise during a consumer rights enforcement drive in the area.

Md Abdus Salam and Rozina Sultana, assistant directors of the Dhaka Divisional Office of the Directorate of National Consumers’ Right Protection, led the drive.

Officials said the trader was charging Tk 165 more than the fixed price for each 12 kg LPG cylinder.

The irregularity was detected during the inspection, following which the business was fined under the Consumer Rights Protection Act.

During the drive, two hotels were also fined Tk 5,000 each for preparing and serving food in unhygienic conditions.

The establishments were found using dirty water for cooking, maintaining unclean premises, and keeping food exposed, officials said.

Md Abdus Salam said selling products above the government-fixed price and preparing or serving food in unhygienic conditions are violations of the Consumer Rights Protection Act.

“Regular drives are being conducted to protect consumers’ interests and ensure compliance with fixed prices and food safety standards,” he said.

He added that such drives would continue against businesses found violating consumer rights.
