The Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) has fined a bottled water company Tk 100,000 for producing and marketing drinking water in an unhygienic environment without approval from the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI).

The drive was conducted on Tuesday in the Madhubagh area under Hatirjheel in the capital, where authorities took action against “Tasnim Drinking Water”.

The drive was led by Nayan Kumar Saha, deputy director of the DNCRP’s Dhaka divisional office, along with assistant director Md Abdus Salam.

During the inspection, officials found that the company had been bottling and supplying drinking water in unsanitary conditions. Although the containers were labelled as containing 19 litres of water, each bottle reportedly contained only 18.5 litres.

Inspectors also found that the company was marketing water without conducting mandatory laboratory tests or employing a chemist to ensure quality standards. In addition, proper hygiene measures were not maintained in the purification and storage processes.

The DNCRP said the company was fined under relevant sections of the Consumer Rights Protection Act, 2009. Authorities also instructed the firm to suspend operations temporarily and warned it to comply with hygiene and safety standards in the future.

Speaking after the drive, Nayan Kumar Saha said operations against activities posing risks to public health would continue regularly.

“No irregularities related to safe food and pure drinking water will be tolerated,” he said.
