A mobile court in Rajshahi has fined a local bakery Tk 8,000 for producing and selling decorated birthday cakes without mandatory certification from the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) and for using non-food-grade materials in an unhygienic production environment.
The drive was conducted around noon on Thursday by the BSTI’s Divisional Office in Rajshahi in collaboration with the district administration.
According to BSTI officials, the mobile court found that Cake Bright, located in the Alupatti area of Kumarpara in Rajshahi city, had been manufacturing, selling and distributing decorated birthday cakes without obtaining the required BSTI quality certification. The establishment was also found to be operating in unsanitary conditions while using non-food-grade ingredients in cake decoration.
The mobile court, led by Executive Magistrate Md Shahriar Islam Nasif of the Rajshahi District Administration, imposed a fine of Tk 8,000 on the bakery.
Engineer Junaid Ahmed, an official of the Certification Marks Wing at the BSTI Divisional Office in Rajshahi, served as the prosecutor during the operation.
Members of the Rajshahi Metropolitan Police assisted in the drive.
BSTI officials said such enforcement operations would continue regularly to curb food adulteration, ensure compliance with quality standards and protect consumers by promoting the supply of safe and standard food products.
