The Directorate of National Consumers Rights Protection (DNCRP) has fined a business Tk200,000 for allegedly repackaging low-quality cumin and selling it in the packaging of reputed brands in Tangail.
The fine was imposed on Mousumi Enterprise following a drive conducted on Monday afternoon at a residential house in the Karotia Cattle Market area.
The operation was led by Asaduzzaman Romel, assistant director of the district DNCRP.
According to the official, the firm had been packing inferior-quality cumin in branded packets and marketing the products, creating a risk of consumer deception as well as discrepancies in weight and quality. The offence falls under the Consumers’ Rights Protection Act, under which the penalty was imposed.
Romel said regular drives would continue to curb such fraudulent practices in the future.
Members of the army and police, along with the sanitary inspector of Sadar upazila, were present during the operation.
