The Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) has sealed two businesses in an operation in Matuail, Dhaka, over alleged consumer rights violations, including the sale of products bearing allegedly counterfeit brand names and misleading claims about their country of origin.
The operation was conducted on Wednesday afternoon at M Rahman Electronics and Dr. Derma Personal Care Limited, where officials found alleged irregularities involving electric stoves, sunflower oil, and olive oil.
According to the information gathered during the drive, M. Rahman Electronics was allegedly selling electric stoves using the names of the brands Prestige and National without proper authorization.
Although the products were labelled “Made in China,” officials found indications that they were manufactured in Bangladesh. The business also failed to produce valid import documents to substantiate its claim that the products had been imported from China.
At Dr Derma Personal Care Limited, officials found alleged discrepancies in the information provided on sunflower oil packaging. The products were marketed as originating from different countries, but the claims regarding their import sources could not be verified during the operation.
The company was also allegedly marketing olive oil under country-of-origin claims that lacked supporting evidence. In addition, officials found allegations of misleading and false advertising on product packaging, which could mislead consumers about the products’ origins and characteristics.
Following the findings, the DNCRP sealed both establishments as part of its action against alleged practices detrimental to consumer interests.
The operation was led by DNCRP Deputy Director (Senior Assistant Secretary) Nayan Kumar Saha and Assistant Director Abdus Salam.
Speaking about the drive, Nayan Kumar Saha said selling products under allegedly counterfeit brand names, providing false information about imports, and using misleading advertisements on product packaging were contrary to consumer interests.
He said market monitoring and enforcement operations would continue to prevent such irregularities and protect consumers.
Accurate information about a product’s country of origin, import status, brand identity, and advertised characteristics is essential for consumers to make informed purchasing decisions. Misrepresentation in these areas can undermine consumer confidence and expose buyers to financial losses.
The DNCRP conducts market surveillance and enforcement drives to address alleged violations of consumer rights and ensure greater transparency in the marketplace.
