The Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) says three Dhaka-based businesses have been fined a total of Tk 1.5 lakh for storing and selling loose edible oil in dirty, unhygienic and unsafe drums.
The fines were imposed during a market inspection on Monday, October 26, 2026, in Shah Ali and Mirpur areas of the capital.
M/s New Ahmed Traders at Shah Ali Market was fined Tk 70,000 for storing loose edible oil in dirty and unhygienic drums. New Howlader Traders, also located at Shah Ali Market, was fined Tk 50,000 for storing loose soybean and palm oil in unhygienic drums without labels.
M/s Hashem General Store in Notun Bazar, Kallyanpur, was fined Tk 30,000 for a similar offense.
The inspection was led by Muhammad Hasanuzzaman, assistant director of the DNCRP’s Dhaka district office, and Tahmina Begum, assistant director at the directorate’s headquarters.
The drive was conducted under the Ministry of Industries’ project titled Digitization of Fortification of Edible Oil for Improved Monitoring, Quality Control, and Capacity Building.
Several agencies took part in the initiative, including the DNCRP, the Ministry of Industries, the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI), the Bangladesh Food Safety Authority, the Bangladesh Industrial Technical Assistance Centre (BITAC), and the Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB).
During the drive, traders were instructed not to store or sell loose edible oil in unhygienic and unsafe containers. They were also directed to display labels containing the required information on containers used to store loose edible oil.
The inspection team also distributed leaflets and pamphlets to raise consumer awareness about rights and protections under the consumer rights law. Consumers who are cheated while purchasing goods or services were urged to lodge complaints with the DNCRP.
The directorate said such market monitoring drives would continue to promote market discipline, fair prices, and access to safe and hygienic food.
