A sweet shop in Dhaka’s Lalbagh area has been fined Tk 1.5 lakh for producing and storing food in unhygienic conditions, manipulating weights and engaging in other consumer rights violations.

The Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) conducted the drive on October 17 near Khan Mohammad Mridha Mosque and Lalbagh Fort, led by Muhammad Hasanuzzaman, assistant director of its Dhaka district office.

During the inspection, officials found irregularities at Al Madina Mishtanno Bhandar, including the use of hydros, a chemical commonly used as a bleaching agent, and failure to display a price list.

The shop was fined Tk 1.5 lakh under Sections 38, 42, and 46 of the Consumer Rights Protection Act, 2009. Officials also seized hydro and unlabelled flavoring agents.

The drive also covered cosmetics shops, pharmacies, and restaurants in the area. Business operators were given necessary instructions and warnings.

Officials distributed leaflets and pamphlets to raise consumer awareness and urged customers to lodge complaints with the DNCRP if they were deceived while purchasing goods or services.

The directorate said such drives would continue to ensure food safety, protect consumer rights, and maintain discipline in the market.
