The Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) fined four establishments a total of Tk 20,000 during a market monitoring drive in Mirpur on Sunday for various violations, including failure to display price lists, provide sales receipts, and mention production and expiry dates on food products.
A team from the DNCRP’s Dhaka Divisional Office conducted the drive in the Mirpur 60 Feet and BNP Bazar areas, led by Assistant Directors Shikdar Shahinur Alam and Indrani Roy.
The team inspected shops selling LPG cylinders, fruits, edible oil, eggs, sweets, and other essential commodities.
An LPG cylinder seller was fined Tk 3,000 for failing to provide sales receipts to customers. A fruit seller was fined Tk 5,000 for not displaying a price list, while a sweet shop was fined Tk 10,000 for failing to mention the production and expiry dates of its products.
An egg seller was also fined Tk 2,000 for not displaying a price list.
During the drive, the team found the supply of edible oil to be normal. The prices of eggs and other essential commodities were also found to be stable, according to the officials.
The DNCRP team advised traders to display updated price lists, provide sales receipts to customers, and ensure that food products carry clear production and expiry dates.
Consumers were also advised to check prices, expiry dates, and other relevant information before purchasing products.
“Several irregularities were found during the market monitoring drive, including the absence of price lists, failure to provide sales receipts, and missing production and expiry dates on food products. Fines were imposed in accordance with the law,” said Assistant Director Shikdar Shahinur Alam.
“The supply and prices of essential commodities are currently normal. Regular market monitoring will continue to safeguard consumers’ rights,” he added.
The DNCRP said such monitoring drives would continue to ensure compliance with consumer protection laws and promote a fair and consumer-friendly market environment.
