The Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) has fined 57 businesses a total of Tk 5.17 lakh during market monitoring operations conducted across Dhaka and 23 districts on Sunday.

A total of 34 teams of the directorate carried out the drives in different markets and business establishments on September 13, 2026, monitoring the prices of essential commodities and checking compliance with consumer protection laws.

The operations focused on preventing overcharging, ensuring that updated price lists were properly displayed, preventing manipulation of weights and measures, and stopping the sale of expired products and medicines.

The teams also inspected businesses to prevent the production and sale of counterfeit and adulterated products, according to the DNCRP.

The directorate said the 34 teams imposed and collected Tk 517,000 in fines from 57 establishments during the day’s operations.

The monitoring drives were conducted in Dhaka Metropolitan area as well as at division and district levels across the country.

As part of the initiative to raise consumer awareness, officials distributed leaflets and pamphlets among consumers and businesses and provided necessary instructions to the traders concerned.

Members of law enforcement agencies, health inspectors, representatives of the Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB), and representatives of relevant industrial and trade associations assisted the DNCRP teams during the operations.

    Instructions for businesses
The DNCRP urged traders to display updated and accurate price lists at visible locations in their establishments.

Businesses were also instructed not to charge prices higher than those fixed by the authorities and to refrain from hoarding goods or creating artificial shortages.

The directorate asked traders to ensure accurate weights and measurements and refrain from selling counterfeit, adulterated or expired products.

It also advised businesses to provide and preserve purchase and sales receipts during transactions.

    Advice for consumers
The directorate urged consumers not to purchase more goods than necessary, warning that excessive buying could contribute to artificial shortages in the market.

Consumers were advised to check the displayed price list before purchasing products and verify their weight and measurements.

The DNCRP also asked consumers to check the maximum retail price (MRP), manufacturing date and expiry date before buying products.

Consumers were further advised not to pay more than the prescribed price and to collect purchase receipts or vouchers from sellers.

The directorate urged consumers who are cheated while purchasing products to lodge complaints through its hotline at 16121.

The DNCRP said such market monitoring operations would continue in the public interest to protect consumers and ensure fair business practices across the country.
