The Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) today fined 35 businesses a total of Tk 559,500 during market monitoring drives conducted in Dhaka and 16 districts across the country.
The drives were aimed at monitoring the prices of essential commodities and preventing various forms of consumer rights violations, including overcharging, manipulation of weights and measures, sale of expired goods and medicines, and the production and sale of counterfeit and adulterated products.
A total of 27 teams of the DNCRP conducted the inspections at different markets and business establishments, the directorate said.
During the drives, officials checked whether traders were properly displaying price lists and complying with regulations on product prices, weights and measurements, as well as manufacturing and expiry dates.
The teams also distributed leaflets and pamphlets among consumers and traders and provided necessary instructions to businesses to ensure compliance with consumer protection regulations.
Members of law enforcement agencies, health inspectors, representatives of the Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB), and representatives of relevant trade and business associations assisted the DNCRP teams during the operations.
The DNCRP urged consumers to check price lists before purchasing products and verify their weight and measurements. Consumers were also advised to check the maximum retail price, manufacturing date and expiry date before buying food, other products or medicines.
The directorate further advised consumers to remain cautious about false and misleading advertisements and not to pay more than the prescribed or displayed price.
The DNCRP said such market monitoring operations would continue across the country in the public interest.
