The Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) conducted market monitoring operations across Dhaka and 43 districts of the country on Saturday to curb unfair business practices and protect consumers.

The drives focused on monitoring the prices of essential commodities, ensuring that price lists were properly displayed, preventing manipulation of weights and measures, and stopping the sale of expired food and medicines. Officials also inspected businesses to prevent the production and sale of counterfeit and adulterated products.

According to the Directorate, 268 teams carried out the operations in Dhaka and across 43 districts. A total of 86 businesses were fined Tk 567,500 for various violations, and the fines were collected on the spot.

As part of efforts to raise consumer awareness, officials distributed leaflets and pamphlets among consumers and traders. They also used loudspeakers to issue instructions and warnings to businesses regarding compliance with consumer protection laws.

Members of law enforcement agencies, as well as representatives from the health, agriculture, and fisheries departments, assisted the Directorate during the operations. Representatives of the Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) and relevant trade and business associations also took part in the market monitoring activities.

The Directorate said such monitoring drives are aimed at ensuring fair prices and business practices while protecting consumers from fraud, adulteration, expired products, and other forms of market irregularities.
