Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will visit Lalmonirhat on November 19 to observe the progress of the ‘Alokito Lalmonirhat’ social movement, Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu has said.
The minister said the initiative aims to make Lalmonirhat free from drugs, gambling, casinos, dowry and child marriage, turning the district into a model for the rest of the country.
He made the announcement while addressing a public consultation meeting at Sahebdanga Stadium in Patgram upazila on Saturday night (November 7).
Dulu said the initiative was not a political movement. Committees have been formed at district, union and ward levels, bringing together deputy commissioners, police superintendents, upazila nirbahi officers, local leaders, teachers, imams, students, journalists, sports personalities and cultural activists.
He said the President inaugurated the initiative on July 4, adding that the Prime Minister would visit the district four months later to observe its implementation firsthand.
The minister also said the Prime Minister had instructed officials to prepare a documentary on the initiative, which would be shown to lawmakers from other districts to replicate the programme nationwide.
Highlighting the ‘Jago Bahe Teesta Bachai’ movement, Dulu said it had generated considerable attention at home and abroad. China, the Netherlands and India had expressed interest in jointly working on the Teesta River, while the main work on the Teesta Master Plan was scheduled to begin formally in 2027.
The minister also stressed the importance of moral education and social values, saying that infrastructure development alone could not ensure quality education without proper moral guidance.
Lalmonirhat Deputy Commissioner Rashedul Haque Pradhan chaired the meeting, which was also attended by Lalmonirhat-1 lawmaker Barrister Hasan Rajib Pradhan, Police Superintendent Asaduzzaman, District Council Administrator AKM Mominul
