The 77th birth anniversary of Bangladesh’s renowned novelist Humayun Ahmed was observed on Thursday (November 13) with various tributes and events at Nuhash Palli in Gazipur. Family members, well-wishers, and fans gathered to pay homage to the celebrated writer.
In the morning, Humayun Ahmed’s wife, Meher Afroz Shaon, along with their two sons, Ninit and Nishad, visited his grave to offer prayers for his soul. Later, 1,077 candles were lit at Nuhash Palli, followed by floral tributes and a cake-cutting ceremony.
As in previous years, fans, poets, writers, and theatre personalities visited the site under the lychee trees at Nuhash Palli to honor the author. Many admirers, dressed as Himu—the beloved character created by Humayun Ahmed—expressed their affection in yellow panjabis, celebrating the legacy of the novelist. Visitors also voiced their concerns and suggestions during the event.
Speaking to the media after the grave visit, Meher Afroz Shaon admitted that the family had been unable to fulfill Humayun Ahmed’s dream of establishing a cancer hospital and museum in his name, taking personal responsibility for the delay.
Humayun Ahmed was born on November 13, 1948, at his maternal grandfather’s house in Mohanganj, Netrokona. His paternal home is in Kutubpur village of Kendua upazila, Netrokona. The son of Foyezur Rahman and Ayesha Foyez, he passed away on July 19, 2012, in a New York hospital after a long battle with cancer.
Through his creative works, Humayun Ahmed continues to live on in the hearts of his fans and admirers.
