A spectacular night of European football produced 46 goals across nine Wednesday fixtures, as Paris Saint-Germain overwhelmed Manchester City, Real Madrid staged a sensational late comeback against Roma, and Liverpool survived a nine-goal thriller against LASK. Aston Villa also delivered a historic performance, while drama unfolded across the continent in a Matchday 2 packed with attacking brilliance and unexpected twists.
The Champions League delivered a night that had almost everything: breathtaking attacking football, dramatic late winners, defensive collapses and individual performances that could prove decisive as the competition progresses.
With 78 goals recorded across the entire matchday, the round set a new scoring record, underlining the extraordinary entertainment on offer.
Six of Wednesday’s nine matches featured at least five goals, but the headlines belonged to Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid and Liverpool.
While the reigning champions demonstrated their European authority in Manchester, Madrid reminded everyone why they are never beaten until the final whistle, and Liverpool witnessed Bradley Barcola announce himself with a memorable hat-trick.
Here is a closer look at the biggest stories from a remarkable night of Champions League action.
Paris Saint-Germain delivered the most convincing statement of the evening, defeating Manchester City 4-2 at the Etihad Stadium in a match that combined attacking brilliance with a spirited second-half fightback.
City’s return to their home ground came amid intense scrutiny following a guilty verdict over serious breaches of Premier League financial regulations. The atmosphere was charged with defiance, and the presence of former manager Pep Guardiola in the directors’ box added another layer of significance.
However, once the match began, PSG quickly took control.
Desire Doue opened the scoring before Ousmane Dembélé doubled the advantage. Vitinha then produced a superb curling finish to send the visitors into half-time with a commanding 3-0 lead. PSG’s movement and passing repeatedly exposed City, leaving the home side struggling to cope with the intensity of the champions’ attack.
City responded after the break, with Erling Haaland scoring twice to revive hopes of a comeback. Yet Maghnes Akliouche struck between the Norwegian’s goals, restoring PSG’s two-goal cushion. Goalkeeper Matvei Safonov also made important saves, while Gianluigi Donnarumma denied former City forward Ferran Torres from the penalty spot late on.
Player of the Match: Vitinha (Paris Saint-Germain)
The result was significant beyond the scoreline. PSG looked organised, confident and devastating in transition, showing the qualities required to challenge for another European crown.
In my opinion, the most impressive aspect of PSG’s performance was their ability to dominate without relying on one individual superstar. Their collective movement and technical quality made them look like a side building something sustainable rather than simply enjoying a temporary period of success.City deserve credit for fighting back, but their first-half performance was deeply concerning. PSG exposed weaknesses that stronger opponents will undoubtedly study.
Real Madrid produce another unforgettable comeback
If PSG supplied the night’s most dominant display, Real Madrid delivered its most dramatic finish.
Madrid recovered from 3-1 down to defeat Roma 4-3 after scoring three times in a frantic final eight minutes, turning what appeared to be a damaging defeat into a remarkable victory.
Marten de Roon gave Roma the lead before Kylian Mbappé equalised on his 100th Champions League appearance. The French forward’s milestone goal was an important moment, but Madrid subsequently found themselves in serious trouble when Donyell Malen struck twice to put the hosts 3-1 ahead.
With time running out, Madrid appeared to be heading towards defeat. Instead, their substitutes changed everything.
Carlos Espí reduced the deficit after goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini failed to hold Endrick’s header. The Brazilian forward then equalised with a header from an Arda Güler corner, before Antonio Rüdiger completed the comeback with a close-range finish from another Güler set-piece delivery.
Player of the Match: Endrick (Real Madrid)
The comeback was a reminder of Madrid’s extraordinary mentality in European competition. They possess an ability to remain dangerous even when the situation appears hopeless, and their late attacking surge punished Roma’s inability to protect a two-goal advantage.
However, Madrid’s defensive problems should not be overlooked. Conceding three goals left them dependent on a spectacular recovery, and they will need greater defensive consistency against Europe’s strongest sides.
Nevertheless, this was precisely the kind of result that can build belief during a long campaign.
Barcola’s hattrick headlines Liverpool’s nine-goal thriller
Liverpool secured a thrilling 6-3 victory over LASK in Linz, with Bradley Barcola delivering the performance of his young career by scoring a Champions League hat-trick.
Ronald Araújo opened the scoring with a header, and Barcola soon followed with his first Liverpool goal. The forward added a second before half-time after connecting with Florian Wirtz’s excellent pass, giving Liverpool a commanding advantage.
Jeremie Frimpong increased the lead after the interval, while Barcola completed his hat-trick as Liverpool appeared to be cruising towards a comfortable victory. Lewis Koumas also found the net.
However, LASK refused to surrender. Robert Ljubičić pulled one back before Florian Flecker scored twice in a rapid second-half spell, turning a seemingly straightforward contest into a more uncomfortable finish for the visitors.
Player of the Match: Bradley Barcola (Liverpool)
Barcola’s three goals were the obvious highlight. His finishing with both feet, movement in behind the defence and confidence in attacking situations offered a glimpse of his considerable potential.
For Liverpool, the result provided an important boost after their recent defeat to Manchester City. Florian Wirtz also impressed, while Frimpong contributed a goal and two assists.
Still, the second-half collapse raised questions about Liverpool’s defensive concentration. Against a stronger opponent, conceding three goals after establishing a substantial lead could prove costly.
My verdict is that Barcola deserves enormous credit, but this should be the beginning of his response to expectations rather than the end of the debate. His next challenge is to reproduce this form against more demanding opposition.
Aston Villa make history with a six-goal rout
Aston Villa produced one of the evening’s most emphatic results, defeating Fenerbahçe 6-0 at Villa Park to record their biggest-ever European victory.
Johan Manzambi marked his 21st birthday with the opening goal, capitalising on a loose clearance following a Villa corner. Nicolas Jackson then scored twice before half-time to put the hosts firmly in control.
Ross Barkley added a second-half brace, including a penalty, before Tammy Abraham completed the scoring in stoppage time.
Player of the Match: Johan Manzambi (Aston Villa)
The result reflected Villa’s attacking efficiency and their ability to punish mistakes. Their performance also reinforced the belief that Unai Emery’s side can be a serious force in European competition.
Although one victory does not establish title credentials, a performance of this magnitude will strengthen confidence and attract attention from potential future opponents.
Feyenoord edge Como in a five-goal contest
Feyenoord claimed a 3-2 victory over Como in Rotterdam after recovering from an early setback.
Assane Diao put Como ahead, but Gjivai Zechiël quickly equalised with an impressive finish. Anis Hadj Moussa then gave Feyenoord the lead after the interval, before a deflected effort involving goalkeeper Robert Sánchez extended the home side’s advantage.
Tasos Douvikas scored late for Como, but Feyenoord held on for the win.
Player of the Match: Anis Hadj Moussa (Feyenoord)
The contest highlighted Feyenoord’s attacking resilience, although Como showed enough quality to suggest that the result could easily have gone differently with greater defensive composure.
Betis, Shakhtar and Bodo/Glimt celebrate important wins
Real Betis edged Porto 3-2 in another entertaining encounter. Abde Ezzalzouli opened the scoring, but Gabriel Veiga and Samu put Porto ahead. Cucho Hernández equalised before Isco converted a late penalty to complete Betis’ comeback.
Player of the Match: Isco (Real Betis)
Shakhtar Donetsk also recovered from a goal down to defeat AEK Athens 3-1. Lovro Majer opened the scoring for the visitors, but Pedrinho equalised from the penalty spot before Vinícius Tobias and substitute Gleiker Mendoza secured the victory.
Player of the Match: Alisson Santana (Shakhtar Donetsk)
Meanwhile, Bodo/Glimt recorded a historic 1-0 win over Borussia Dortmund. Fredrik Sjovold scored seven minutes after half-time, giving the Norwegian side their first victory against German opposition and their first points of the campaign.
Player of the Match: Fredrik Sjovold (Bodo/Glimt)
Stuttgart completed the evening’s fixtures with a convincing 3-0 away victory over Slovan Bratislava. Deniz Undav opened the scoring, an own goal extended Stuttgart’s lead, and Ermedin Demirović completed the win with a header.
Player of the Match: Josha Vagnoman (Stuttgart)
