Bangladesh have clinched the title in the Challenger division of the Junior Hockey World Cup, defeating Austria 5–2 in Madurai on Monday. The International Hockey Federation (FIH) officially rebranded the placement round—contested by the eight teams eliminated from the group stage—as the ‘Challenger Trophy’, which Bangladesh have now won in emphatic fashion.
Bangladesh’s star defender Amirul Islam once again delivered a remarkable performance, scoring a hat-trick. This was his fifth hat-trick in six matches, bringing his tournament tally to 18 goals—the highest in the Junior World Cup so far. His extraordinary consistency has elevated Bangladesh hockey to new heights on the global stage.
A Confident Victory for 17th Place Overall
The match against Austria was the official 17th-place playoff of the main World Cup standings. Austria started the match well, generating early pressure, but failed to convert their chances. Bangladesh took the lead in the final minute of the first quarter through a penalty corner strike by Amirul, who had narrowly missed scoring from another penalty corner just moments earlier.
In the second quarter, Bangladesh doubled the lead from another penalty corner, taken by Huzaifa. After the break, Rakibul Hasan Rocky scored a field goal to extend the lead to 3–0. Austria pulled one back in the 44th minute, but Amirul completed his hat-trick from a penalty stroke in the final quarter, effectively sealing the trophy for Bangladesh.
Late pressure from Austria saw them score twice more, raising the possibility of a comeback, but Bangladesh held firm in the closing minutes to secure their third consecutive win in the tournament.
Bangladesh’s Road to the Challenger Title
Bangladesh delivered an impressive overall campaign.
In their opening match, despite Amirul’s hat-trick, they narrowly lost 5–3 to hockey powerhouse Australia.
A 3–3 draw followed against South Korea, again thanks to an Amirul hat-trick.
The group stage ended with a close 3–2 defeat to last edition’s runners-up France, with Amirul scoring once.
Failing to qualify for the top 16, Bangladesh entered the 17–24 placement fixtures.
They opened with a commanding 13–0 win over Oman, where Amirul scored five goals.
Bangladesh then defeated South Korea 5–3, with Amirul once again scoring a hat-trick.
The final showdown against Austria confirmed their dominance, giving them the Challenger Trophy—Bangladesh’s biggest achievement in global hockey to date.
This historic run, driven by Amirul Islam’s phenomenal scoring record, marks a milestone moment for Bangladesh in the world of hockey.
