Former Bangladesh national football captain Aminul Haque has been appointed a State Minister in the newly formed Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-led government on Tuesday, marking a notable transition from the sporting arena to national governance.

Aminul, who contested the recent general election as a technocrat candidate, is among 24 individuals named as State Ministers under the leadership of incoming Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, following the BNP’s decisive victory in the polls. The list was officially released on Tuesday and features a blend of senior politicians and technocrats. The newly appointed State Ministers are expected to take the oath later this week.

Widely respected for his contribution to Bangladesh football, Aminul Haque captained the national team during a significant period and remains one of the most recognisable faces in the country’s football history. His elevation to the ministry reflects the BNP’s broader approach of bringing professionals and sports personalities into public service as it forms its first cabinet in nearly two decades.

Although his specific portfolio is yet to be formally announced, the former goalkeeper’s background has sparked expectations that he could play a meaningful role in areas related to youth, sports development, and cultural affairs.
