A Cox’s Bazar court has sentenced two men to death for trafficking crystal meth (ice) and yaba in Teknaf. The verdict was delivered on Sunday afternoon by District and Sessions Judge Abdur Rahim, Public Prosecutor Md Sirajul Islam confirmed.
The convicts are Abdur Rahman, 33, son of late Kader Boksh of Whaebrang area under Hnila Union in Teknaf, and Nur Mohammad, 28, son of Abdus Salam from Maulvibazar area of the same union.
According to case documents, on the night of 16 June 2016, a Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) team conducted an operation in the MG Banker area of Hnila after receiving information about a large consignment of drugs being smuggled in from Myanmar.
BGB members spotted five suspects crossing the zero line carrying two sacks. When ordered to stop, the men attempted to flee under the cover of darkness. BGB personnel managed to detain two of them, while the others escaped.
A search of the area led to the recovery of the abandoned sacks, which contained 4.315 kg of crystal meth and 100,000 yaba pills, with an estimated combined value of Tk 24.57 crore.
Later that day, a BGB member filed a case with Teknaf Police Station, naming six individuals as accused.
PP Sirajul Islam said the court framed charges against Abdur Rahman and Nur Mohammad in December 2024. After a lengthy judicial process, the court found the charges proven beyond doubt and ordered both men to be hanged. The convicts were present when the verdict was announced.
Earlier, on 25 November, the same court sentenced two individuals—including a Rohingya man—to death in another yaba trafficking case, while two others received life imprisonment and one was acquitted.
