BNP Standing Committee member and former Bhola-3 lawmaker Major (Retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, Bir Bikram, has launched a scathing attack on the Awami League government, calling Sheikh Hasina “the world’s most ruthless ruler”.
Speaking as chief guest at a mass reception organised by Lalmohan Upazila and Municipality BNP on Saturday afternoon at the Shahbazpur Government College ground, he said the past 17 years under the Awami League had been “a period of immense suffering” for the people.
“The extent of repression carried out by this government is unparalleled. Sheikh Hasina became prime minister without people’s votes,” he alleged.
Hafiz further claimed that the Awami League government plundered public money in the name of development projects. “They didn’t complete the projects; instead they looted the funds and siphoned the money abroad. This shows the scale of corruption that took place,” he said, adding that BNP’s politics is centred on people’s welfare and that development only takes place when BNP is in power.
He urged party leaders and supporters to unite to bring BNP back to power in the upcoming national election.
Earlier, Hafiz participated in a six-kilometre-long procession where thousands of BNP leaders and activists from the upazila, municipality, and different unions joined to welcome him after receiving the party nomination for Bhola-3.
Lalmohan Upazila BNP President Md Zafar Iqbal presided over the event, conducted by General Secretary Shafikul Islam Babul. Former joint convenor of the upazila BNP Principal Md Farid Uddin, Sohel Aziz Shahin, Safiullah Hawlader, Municipality BNP President Sadek Mia Jantu, and General Secretary Md Kamruzzaman Babul Patwary, among others, were present.
