Following the announcement of the death sentence for former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, sporadic protests were reported in various parts of Gopalganj, particularly in her home constituency of Tungipara.

On Monday at around 2:20 pm, workers of the banned student and youth wings of the ruling party staged a protest march in front of Tungipara Sheikh Russel Shishu Park. The demonstrators briefly blocked the road and set fires on the street for about 20 minutes before fleeing when police arrived. Authorities later confirmed that the situation in Tungipara had returned to normal.

Meanwhile, several student wing activists also staged protests on the Dhaka-Khulna Highway near Dola Petrol Pump in Gopalganj Sadar. They set fire to wooden barricades on the highway before dispersing. Earlier, similar protests occurred in Dumdia area of Gopalganj Sadar and near farmland across from 7 March Square, where a few individuals gathered with crude weapons before leaving as police approached.

Earlier in the morning around 7:45 am, banned student wing activists obstructed the Dhaka-Khulna Highway near Tilchhara Bazar in Kashiani Upazila by felling trees on the road. Vehicles were temporarily stranded on both sides of the highway until police arrived, cleared the obstruction, and restored traffic flow. Kashiani police officer-in-charge Kamal Hossain said, “A few people attempted to block the road but fled upon seeing police. The blockade was not successful.”

In response to the verdict, law enforcement agencies deployed heightened security measures across Gopalganj, with police stationed at key locations and highway patrols intensified.

The district remained largely quiet following the tribunal’s announcement. Leaders of various political parties and professional groups in Gopalganj declined to comment on the ruling.
