Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) chief organizer for southern region Hasnat Abdullah has criticized law enforcement, alleging that the police force has reverted to fascist behavior.
Speaking at an electoral street rally in Jashore on Saturday, Hasnat cited recent police actions in Dhaka as a “test match” that forewarns of a troubling environment for the upcoming general election.
Addressing a gathering organized by an 11-party alliance at Daratana Bhairab Chattar, Hasnat urged police officials to remain accountable to their conscience and the state rather than any specific political entity. He invoked the volatile events of last July as a reminder of the consequences of partisan policing.
“I swear by the Almighty, stand for justice and fairness,” Abdullah said, directing his comments at law enforcement officers. “You are here to serve the people of Bangladesh. Your salary comes from public tax money, not from the coffers of any political party. If you patronize a political group to bring them to power today, tomorrow you will be forced to pay bribes to them for your own children’s employment.”
He appealed to the force to operate as the “Police of Bangladesh,” rather than functioning as an arm of the BNP, Jamaat, or NCP.
Turning his attention to electoral strategy, Hasnat instructed supporters—specifically calling on members of Chhatra Shibir and Chhatra Shakti—to be vigilant.
He directed them to occupy polling centers from 7:30 AM on election day and remain until results are officially declared.
He alleged that a specific political party is already plotting to capture polling centers.
Hasnat also provided a critical analysis of the current state of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). He claimed that grassroots activists are seeking liberation from “extortionist leaders” and “hybrid” figures who have marginalized those who suffered enforced disappearances and persecution over the last 17 years.
He predicted a fracture in voter loyalty, suggesting that while these grassroots workers might march under the BNP’s “Sheaf of Paddy” symbol, they are preparing to cast their votes for the “Scales” (Jamaat) or “Shapla Koli” (NCP) symbols.
The rally was presided over by NCP Jashore District Coordinator Md. Nuruzzaman. Other notable speakers included Abdul Kader, the Jamaat-e-Islami candidate for the Jashore-3 constituency, and NCP organizer Shakib Shahriar.
