A case filed over the killing of Pir Abdur Rahman Shamim in Daulatpur upazila of Kushtia, names four, including Khaja Ahmed, former president of Kushtia district Islami Chhatra Shibir and a full member (rukn) of Jamaat-e-Islami.The other accused people are local Jamaat activist Rajib Mistri, Upazila President of Khelafat Majlish Asaduzzaman Asad, and Safi, a madrasa teacher from Abeder Ghat.Delwar Hossain, additional superintendent of police (Bheramara Circle), confirmed the matter to The Daily Star, saying no arrests had been made as of this afternoon.
The case was filed late Monday night by the victim’s brother, Fazlur Rahman, at Daulatpur Police Station.Besides naming four, it accused 180–200 unidentified persons.
Kushtia’s Jamaat secretary Suja Uddin Joardar confirmed to The Daily Star that Khaja was a former president of Shibir (Jamaat student wing) and is currently a member of Jamaat.
Responding to the allegations, Jamaat-e-Islami’s Daulatpur unit chief Belal Uddin said anyone might be named as suspects in the case but stressed that none of his party members were involved. “We will deal with the allegations legally.”Khaja Ahmed, who is the main suspect, told The Daily Star that the deceased was his relative. “I went to recover the body at the instruction of his brother. I spoke with the police several times on the day of the incident. I also told them that I wanted to run for the union parishad election, so I don’t want to get caught in the middle of anything. Yet I have been made the main accused,” he said.
He also claimed leaders of BNP, Jubo Dal, and Swechchhasebak Dal were present at the scene but were not named in the case.
