The Bengali New Year was celebrated in Barishal in a vibrant and festive mood, marked by processions and cultural programmes through the day.

The day began at the crack of dawn with a traditional “probhat feri” (morning programme) at the BM School ground, organised by Udichi Shilpigoshthi and Barishal Natak. The programme featured songs, recitations, and dance performances to welcome the new year. The programme opened with the iconic Baishakh song “esho he baishakh, esho esho,” setting the tone for the celebrations. Performers from Udichi and other cultural organisations staged a series of musical, dance, and recitation performances.

The national anthem was later performed formally. This was followed by honouring freedom fighters, a symbolic rakhi bandhan, and the beating of drums to begin the traditional parade known as the ‘Mangal Shobhajatra’.

The procession showcased a rich display of Bengali folk heritage, including colourful masks, crowns, traditional headgear, palm-leaf fans, toy parrots and horses. People of all ages—from children to the elderly—took part in the festivities.

A three-day Baishakhi fair has also been organised at the BM School ground by Udichi and Barishal Natak, drawing large crowds.
