A Sirajganj court has issued an arrest warrant against Kushtia-3 lawmaker and Jamaat-e-Islami leader Amir Hamza in a defamation case filed over alleged derogatory remarks about Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood Tuku.
The order was issued on Tuesday, by the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Court.Earlier, the court summoned Amir Hamza to appear before it on April 21. As he failed to appear on the scheduled date, the court ordered an arrest warrant issued against him.
Amir Hamza, who is currently travelling, said he was not aware of it, according to media reports.
The defamation case was filed on April 2 by Humayun Kabir, additional public prosecutor of Sirajganj District and General Secretary of the District Bar Association.
The complaint alleges that Amir Hamza called Minister Tuku “an atheist” and made derogatory remarks about Islam. The case was filed under sections 296, 500, and 504 of the Penal Code.
The remarks stemmed from a speech delivered by Minister Tuku on March 26, in which he paid tribute to the Liberation War and freedom fighters.
