A passenger bus reportedly plunged into the Padma River while attempting to board a ferry at Daulatdia in Goalanda Upazila, Rajbari, on Wednesday afternoon (March 25), raising fears of multiple casualties.
According to local sources, the Dhaka-bound bus of Souhardya Paribahan lost control while trying to board the ferry at Daulatdia No. 3 Ferry Ghat and fell into the river.
Several passengers were able to swim to safety, but most are feared to have been submerged. Locals gathered at the ferry ghat as rescue operations began.
Deowan Sohel Rana, Deputy Assistant Director of Rajbari Fire Service, said, “The Dhaka-bound Souhardya Paribahan bus fell into the river while trying to board the ferry. Our diving teams are coming from Paturia and Aricha ghats to assist in the rescue operation.”
Fire service and police personnel have reached the site to coordinate the rescue efforts, which are ongoing. The exact number of passengers on board and the full extent of casualties are yet to be confirmed.
