Police have detained a woman in Madaripur’s Sadar upazila over allegations that she seriously injured her husband following a dispute reportedly linked to extramarital suspicions.

The incident occurred early Saturday (January 17) in Diabari Matubbar Bari village under Kunia Union. The injured man, Habib Matubbar, 35, is an expatriate living in Italy. The detained woman is his wife, Shiuli Begum, 29.

According to police and hospital sources, the couple had been embroiled in longstanding domestic disputes since their marriage, centring on allegations of extramarital relations. Several local mediations had been held earlier, but no lasting resolution was reached.

On Friday night, the couple reportedly argued again. At some point in the early hours, the wife allegedly assaulted her husband while he was asleep, causing severe injuries. Hearing his screams, local residents rushed to the scene and took him to Madaripur District Sadar Hospital.

Habib’s cousin, Hridoy Matubbar, said the couple went to bed after dinner and later began arguing. “At one stage, Shiuli allegedly attacked my cousin with a sharp object. We rushed in after hearing his cries and took him to hospital,” he said.

Doctors said the victim’s condition is serious and he may be referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment if necessary.

Habib Matubbar has denied allegations of extramarital involvement and said he does not know why his wife carried out the attack. He told doctors and relatives that he intends to file a case against her.

The accused woman, however, claimed that her husband was involved in relationships with multiple women and frequently spoke to them over the phone. She alleged that he mistreated her when she protested and said she acted out of anger.

Madaripur Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abul Kalam Azad said the woman was detained along with the sharp object allegedly used in the incident. “The matter is under investigation, and legal action will be taken accordingly,” he said.
