KABIR HOSSAIN, 40, a migrant worker from Baraigram upazila of Natore, was killed by miscreants in Malaysia while on duty, plunging his family and village into deep mourning.

The incident took place at Chaman Dayautiram area in Malaysia, where Kabir was working as a security guard. News of his death reached his family early Wednesday, triggering scenes of grief as relatives and neighbours gathered at his home in Gopalpur Koillipara village under Gopalpur Union.

Kabir, son of Tota Mia, went to Malaysia in 2018 in search of a better livelihood to support his wife and only son. He had been employed as a security guard at a company named KCL. According to family members, he was scheduled to return home on January 3 and had already begun preparations, including shopping for his family.

Family sources said Kabir spoke to his wife over the phone around 9:00pm on Tuesday night — his last contact with home. Later that night, while on duty at a factory, miscreants allegedly tied his hands, legs and mouth, assaulted him on the head and strangled him to death.

Around 4:00am on Wednesday, one of Kabir’s acquaintances in Malaysia informed the family of his death over the phone.

Kabir’s son, Sohag Hossain, said his father’s return had been eagerly awaited by the family. “We were counting the days to his return, but everything is over now,” he said, urging the government to take steps to repatriate his father’s body as soon as possible.

His wife, Shuli Begum, broke down in tears, saying she had been unable to speak at length during their last phone call due to chest pain. “He asked me to call him back later. When I did, he did not answer. Who killed my husband and why? I want justice,” she said.

Baraigram Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Laila Jannatul Ferdous said the administration was deeply saddened by the incident. “We are in contact with the family and monitoring the situation closely. The upazila administration will stand by the family in any way necessary,” she added.
