BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that an unnecessary crisis has been deliberately created in Bangladesh. “There was no need for this crisis. I believe it has been intentionally engineered,” he told an event on Wednesday.
He made the remarks while presiding over a discussion at the Bangladesh-China Maitri Conference Centre in Dhaka on the occasion of the National Revolution and Solidarity Day, observed on 7 November.
Fakhrul further said, “7 November was a day of rebellion against authoritarianism. It was on this day that the late President Ziaur Rahman changed the course of Bangladesh’s history.”
Addressing the country’s political leadership, he added, “This crisis is unnecessary and has no justification. I believe it has been created deliberately to obstruct the democratic transition, hinder the elections necessary for genuine reform, and put the future of the people in uncertainty.”
He urged political forces to unite and resist all conspiracies, saying, “Let us stand together to block all plots and pave the way for Bangladesh’s true democratic transition.”
The discussion was attended virtually by BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman as chief guest. Other attendees included BNP standing committee members Dr. Khondkar Mosharraf Hossain, Goyeshwar Chandra Roy, Dr. Abdul Moin Khan, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Salahuddin Ahmed, Begum Selima Rahman, Major (Retd.)
