Police have arrested Sharmin Sultana Sormi, 44, a former leader of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations, from the Sheikh Saheb Bazar area of Lalbagh in the capital in connection with a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

Lalbagh police said they arrested her during a raid in the area around 1:30am on Sunday following a tip-off about her whereabouts.

According to police, Sormi is a suspect in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

Based on the information, a team from Lalbagh Police Station conducted an operation in the Sheikh Saheb Bazar area and arrested her, police said.

Police said their preliminary investigation found that Sormi had previously served as the organising secretary of the Eden Mohila College unit of the Bangladesh Chhatra League, the former assistant secretary of a sub-committee of the Awami League, and organising secretary of the Jubo Mohila League for the 2017–2022 term.
