Police have arrested eight leaders and activists of the Awami League, Jubo League, and Chhatra League in Jamalpur under the Special Powers Act during special drives conducted across the district over the past 12 hours.
The arrests were confirmed by Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) of Jamalpur Sadar Circle, Yahia Al Mamun, on Thursday (November 13).
The detainees are — Junaed Ahmed Polin (24), joint convener of Ranagacha Union Chhatra League in Sadar upazila; Harunur Rashid (49), vice-president of Sarishabari upazila Jubo League; Khorshed Alam (42), organizing secretary of Polbandha Union Awami League in Islampur upazila; Ranjhu Mia Sujon (30), president of ward no. 2 Jubo League unit of Adarvita Union in Madarganj upazila; Mizanur Rahman (35), vice-president of Nangla Union Jubo League in Melandah upazila; Suman Mia (35), general secretary of ward no. 4 Awami League unit of Dhanuya Kamalpur Union in Bakshiganj upazila; Dudu Mia (65), joint general secretary of ward no. 5 Awami League unit of Sadhurpara Union; and Shahjahan (45), a member of the same union Awami League.
ASP Yahia Al Mamun said police conducted the operation across several upazilas and arrested the eight in connection with multiple cases. “They have been sent to court following their arrest,” he added.
