    World Bank eyes support for Bangladesh’s agriculture sector, focus on inputs, markets

    The World Bank has expressed interest in supporting Bangladesh’s agricultural sector, particularly in supplying farm inputs, promoting agri-processing, and improving market infrastructure.

    Jean Pesme, Division Director for Bangladesh and Bhutan at the World Bank, led a delegation to meet Agriculture and Fisheries and Livestock Minister Mohammed Aminur Rashid at the Ministry of Agriculture on Sunday.Minister Rashid welcomed the delegation and highlighted the government’s ‘Farmer Card’ initiative, which will roll out across the country in phases, beginning this year with pilot projects in 11 blocks.

    He said the card aims to protect farmers’ interests, increase production, and ensure sustainable development in the sector.During the meeting, officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries and Livestock, the Ministry of Food, and the World Bank discussed ways to strengthen cooperation for sustainable agriculture and improve farmers’ livelihoods.

    The delegation included South Asia Regional Director for Sustainable Development Dina Umali-Deininger and other senior World Bank representatives.
