Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Towhid Hossain has said there is no official information regarding the possible extradition of former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, who has been sentenced to death for crimes against humanity and is currently believed to be in India.

His remarks came on Monday at a session titled “Bangladesh’s Foreign Policy: Defining a Relevant Role in a Changing World”, organised by the Diplomatic Correspondents Association, Bangladesh (DCAB) at the National Press Club.

Towhid Hossain clarified, “There is no information that Kamal will be extradited first. I have no official information on this.”

Earlier, Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam had hinted that India might begin the extradition process with Kamal. In a Facebook post on Friday (28 November), he wrote that India would first extradite Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal.

On 17 November, the International Crimes Tribunal sentenced former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and former home minister Kamal to death after finding them guilty of crimes against humanity in the July killing incident last year.

Following the verdict, the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi recently sent a diplomatic note to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, requesting the handover of Sheikh Hasina. Bangladesh had earlier, in December last year, also sent a letter requesting her repatriation.
