Attorney General Md. Asaduzzaman described Monday’s ruling by the International Crimes Tribunal as a landmark in Bangladesh’s history, stating that justice has been served to the martyrs, the state, and the prosecution.

“Today, an important verdict has been delivered in Bangladesh’s history. In this judgment, the martyrs have received justice, the state has received justice, and the prosecution has also received justice,” the Attorney General said following the tribunal’s announcement of the death sentence for former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. “Considering our responsibility to the martyrs, the nation, its citizens, the constitution, the rule of law, and future generations, this verdict is historic. It will bring closure and send a message for the future. It is a milestone for justice and the rule of law in Bangladesh.”

He further explained that in Sheikh Hasina’s case, two accused have been sentenced to the maximum penalty, death, while a third accused, who appeared as a key prosecution witness, has been sentenced to five years in prison. “The tribunal has consolidated the five charges into three counts and delivered sentences accordingly. In line with legal provisions, the sentences will take effect from the date of arrest. The state will take all necessary legal measures,” he said.

The Attorney General added that the tribunal directed compensation for the families of the martyrs and those injured in the protests. He also confirmed that all properties belonging to Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal have been confiscated.

On the question of appeals, he noted, “While in hiding, the accused cannot appeal within Bangladesh or, to my knowledge, anywhere else in the world.”
