The High Court today sought a report from the prison authorities on the number and age profile of children living in prisons with their incarcerated mothers across the country.
The court directed the inspector general of prisons to submit the report within two months.The HC also issued a rule asking the government authorities concerned to explain why they should not be directed to take necessary steps to ensure the safety, welfare, education, development and fundamental rights of these children.
Deputy Attorney General Md Faruk Hossein told The Daily Star that the order and rule were issued by a High Court bench comprising Justice Khizir Ahmed Choudhury and Justice Md Ziaul Haque following a writ petition filed by Supreme Court lawyer Quamrun Nahar Mahmud Deepa.
