The government has no restrictions or objections regarding the return of BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman to Bangladesh, according to Shafiqul Alam, press secretary to the party’s chief adviser.

On Saturday (29 November), he shared the information in a post on his verified Facebook account.

He stated that someone had asked him whether the government would impose any restrictions on Tarique Rahman’s return. In response, he said there are no such restrictions or objections. Below is the exact content of his Facebook post:

“Tarique Rahman, in a statement today, said: ‘The decision to return to the country at this moment is not solely under my control or within my unilateral authority.’ Inquiries were made to the press secretary of the chief adviser asking whether there are any government-imposed restrictions on his return to Bangladesh. The press secretary confirmed that the government has no restrictions or objections. He also noted that Professor Muhammad Yunus, the chief adviser, has expressed deep concern over BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia’s health and has requested prayers from the nation on her behalf.”

Earlier on Saturday, Tarique Rahman himself posted on his verified Facebook page: “Like any child, I have a deep desire to be close to my mother in these times of crisis. However, like others, my ability to act on this is not solely within my control or unilateral authority.”
