A Dhaka court has imposed a travel ban on Moazzem Hossain, former assistant private secretary (APS) to Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan, in connection with a money laundering investigation.

Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Sabbir Faiz passed the order on Monday following a petition filed by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). Bench assistant Md Riaz Hossain confirmed the development.Earlier in the day, CID Sub-Inspector Md Abdul Hannan submitted the application seeking the travel restriction.

According to the petition, Moazzem Hossain allegedly amassed assets worth hundreds of crores of taka through lobbying, tender manipulation, and extortion during his tenure as APS to the then adviser for local government and sports in the interim government.

The application further alleged that he smuggled the illicit funds abroad to countries including the United Arab Emirates, Canada and the United States. An investigation into the alleged money laundering is currently underway.

The CID also noted that the accused may attempt to leave the country at any time, making the travel ban necessary to ensure a fair investigation.

Earlier, on May 24 last year, the same court—acting on an application by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC)—had blocked Moazzem Hossain’s National Identity Card (NID) and imposed a travel ban.

He had later sought permission on January 20 to travel to Thailand for medical treatment, but the court rejected the request.
