A writ petition has been filed with the High Court challenging the legality of the reciprocal trade agreement signed between Bangladesh and the United States, describing it as unreasonable, structurally imbalanced and contrary to national interests.

Supreme Court lawyers Mohammad Maidul Islam Polok and Subir Nandi Das submitted the public interest writ to the relevant branch of the High Court on Monday (4 May).Secretaries of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Finance and Commerce have been made respondents in the writ.

The petition claims that the agreement does not adequately protect Bangladesh’s economic sovereignty or public welfare and was finalised without following the required constitutional procedures.

The writ further alleges that the deal imposes an unequal tariff structure on Bangladesh, undermines policy-making independence and could potentially harm domestic industries, agriculture and the environment.

The trade agreement between Bangladesh and the United States was signed on 9 February, 2026.
