Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Saturday gave instructions to the officials concerned on rehabilitating the recently evicted hawkers in the capital at the earliest.
He gave the instructions during a meeting with officials including DNCC and DSCC administrators, RAJUK officials, Local Government Division officials and DMP officers. The new fixed spots must be selected judiciously to ensure that the vendors will spontaneously resume their business there, the PM further said.
After the BNP-led government assumed power in February, hawkers have been evicted from Mirpur-1, Motijheel, Baitul Mukarram, Paltan and Gulistan areas.
On the same day, Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Shafiqul Islam Khan said at a programme that Dhaka city authorities are preparing six open fields in the capital to host the evicted street vendors.
The hawkers will be enlisted under a new register to ensure their legal status. They can only use their carts or trolleys at the open market, and will have to pay a fee to fund maintenance, the DNCC administrator said at a discussion session hosted at a Dhaka hotel.
The street hawkers, representing only 2% of Dhaka city’s population, are obstructing movement for 98% of people, DNCC Administrator Shafiqul Islam Khan said at the discussion session.
It is completely unacceptable that a few such people will cause sufferings for the large majority, he added.
