Abdur Rashid Jitu, vice-president of the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU), has joined the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), while 11 other student leaders, including vice-presidents and general secretaries from different hall unions of JU, have joined Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, BNP’s student wing.
The joining ceremony took place on Friday afternoon at the BNP’s central office in Nayapaltan, in the presence of BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Chhatra Dal President Rakibul Islam Rakib and General Secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir.
Speaking on the occasion, JUCSU Vice-President Abdur Rashid Jitu said he would work for the Bangladesh Nationalist Party to build a better Bangladesh, upholding the spirit of the 1952 Language Movement as well as the Liberation War of 1971 and the July Uprising of 2024.
Abdur Rashid Jitu, a student of the 47th batch of the Comparative Literature and Cultural Institute, was elected VP with 3,334 votes, defeating his nearest rivals, Arifullah Adib, a Shibir-backed candidate, and Arifuzzaman Uzzal, a Bangladesh Democratic Students’ Union and now Jatiya Chhatra Shakti-backed candidate, who secured 2,392 and 1,211 votes, respectively.
At the same programme, seven vice-presidents, three general secretaries and one assistant general secretary from various hall unions of Jahangirnagar University joined Chhatra Dal.
Those who joined include Ibn-e-Shihab, vice-president of Nawab Salimullah Hall; Rifat Ahmed Shakil, vice-president of Al Beruni Hall; GMM Raihan Kabir, vice-president of AFM Kamal Uddin Hall; Amit Banik, vice-president of Rabindranath Tagore Hall; Bubli Ahmed, vice-president of Nawab Fayzunnesa Hall; Farhana Rithi, vice-president of Begum Khaleda Zia Hall; and Maruf Hasan, vice-president of Shaheed Salam Barkat Hall.
Among the general secretaries who joined are Shahriya Nazim Riyad of Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall, Shariful Islam of Shaheed Rafiq Jabbar Hall, and Masud Rana Mistu of Shaheed Salam Barkat Hall.
Ripon Mondol, assistant general secretary of AFM Kamal Uddin Hall, also joined Chhatra Dal.
