At least 19 people were injured in a clash between BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami in Monpura upazila, Bhola on Friday morning, after both sides launched election campaigns in the same area.

At least two were injured critically – BNP activist Gani Majhi and Jamaat’s Idris Majhi – and were admitted to the Manpura Upazila Health Complex.

Manpura Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mahmud Al Farid said both sides engaged in a “fistfight,” but no major conflict took place. Police successfully contained tensions within a short time, he added.

The two political activists admitted at the Upazila Health Complex are now in “largely stable conditions,” Mahmud Al Farid noted.

Eyewitnesses, said that BNP activists were electioneering at Master Haat area, Uttar Sakuchia Union in the upazila around 10:30pm. All of a sudden, a group of Jamaat activists launched their own election campaign in the same area.

A heated argument erupted between the two sides. The rival activists also chanted “provocative slogans” aimed at each other. Soon, the tensions led to a scuffle and a full-blown clash.

Police later intervened between the two groups and brought the situation under control.
