An Iranian attack on a power and water desalination plant in Kuwait has killed one Indian worker and damaged a building at the site, according to Kuwaiti authorities, as regional tensions heighten amid the United States-Israeli war on Iran.

“A service building at a power and water desalination plant was attacked as part of the Iranian aggression against the State of Kuwait, resulting in the death of an Indian worker and significant material damage to the building,” Kuwait’s Ministry of Electricity said in a statement on Monday. This was shortly after Iran’s power plants and facilities were attacked which saw massive power outages in the capital Tehran and nearby Karaj. What Iran has said over and over again is that it will match attacks on the country, and that’s what we saw in the incident in Kuwait.

There’s been serious concern in the GCC that integrated power plants and water desalination plants like this one that was attacked in Kuwait would be targeted, which would be a major piece of critical infrastructure. When I say infrastructure, the region produces 40 percent of overall global desalinated water, and it is consumed in the region, and it’s where these cities get their potable drinking water from.
