Eleven people, including seven children and four women, were hospitalised after falling ill allegedly after eating a birthday cake in Nalasopara, Maharashtra, where a dead lizard was reportedly found in the cake.

According to reports, several guests began experiencing sudden stomach and chest pain shortly after eating the cake at a birthday celebration. They were subsequently taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Doctors said the condition of all 11 patients was stable and that they were receiving medical care.

The incident has renewed concerns over food safety and the quality of bakery products in Maharashtra, particularly the safety of food served to children at private gatherings.

The case comes amid growing scrutiny of food safety standards at online grocery and quick-commerce facilities in the state. Recently, a rat was reportedly spotted inside an ice-cream freezer at a Blinkit store in the Godrej Hill area of Thane, triggering widespread discussion on social media and calls for stricter food safety measures.

In another incident, food safety authorities reportedly found violations at a Blinkit-linked facility in Malad West. Following an inspection, the authorities suspended the establishment’s licence.

The Nalasopara incident comes as food safety authorities have stepped up inspections of facilities associated with quick-commerce and online food delivery services across Maharashtra.

Details of how the dead lizard ended up in the cake and where the cake was supplied from have not yet been disclosed. Further investigation into the incident is underway.
